A Practical Sod Installation Guide

A successful sod job starts before the truck arrives. Prepare the ground, choose grass suited to the site and have a watering plan ready. This homeowner checklist helps you discuss a delivery-only order or an installation quote with Sunshine Sod.

Sod being fitted against prepared soil

1. Measure and Choose

Divide the lawn into manageable shapes and measure only the ground receiving sod. Exclude paths, buildings and planting beds. Use our area calculator for rectangular sections; curved edges and cutting waste need a separate allowance. Confirm pallet coverage and the final quantity before ordering.

Check sunlight across the day, note slopes and drainage, and consider pets, play and mowing. Compare grass types before choosing a cultivar. We’ll help match the lawn to available light and plan drainage improvements before installation.

Warm-season grasses establish most actively in warm growing weather, with late spring and early summer a useful regional starting point. Tall fescue grows most strongly in spring and fall and generally establishes best in cooler conditions on unfrozen soil. Plan around the grass, current weather and dependable watering rather than a single date for every property.

2. Prepare the Site

If you need professional preparation, make sure the quote states what is included. Confirm removal, grading and irrigation needs with us so your quote covers the work you want.

3. Coordinate Delivery and Laying

Confirm truck access, unloading space, gates, slopes and overhead obstructions. Have labor, tools and water available so sod can be laid promptly after arrival. Avoid ordering sod to sit on pallets while other site work is still underway.

Begin along a straight edge where practical. Fit pieces closely without stretching or overlapping them, stagger seams, and keep sod in contact with the prepared soil. Avoid small pieces at exposed edges where they dry easily. Steep slopes or unusual site conditions deserve project-specific advice rather than a one-size-fits-all method.

4. Water and Protect

Begin watering promptly, including completed sections while a larger job continues. Keep the sod and underlying root zone consistently moist without saturation. Gently check beneath a corner at least daily and more often in hot, windy weather. Adjust to rainfall, sun, soil and sprinkler coverage; pause or shorten irrigation when rain has supplied the moisture, and avoid standing water or runoff.

Protect new sod from heavy use while roots develop. Initial anchoring is not full traffic readiness. As the lawn establishes, use our maintenance guide for rooting checks, watering transitions and grass-specific mowing heights.

Before You Confirm the Order

  1. Is the grass appropriate for the location, sunlight and intended use?
  2. Are preparation, quantity, access and unloading agreed?
  3. Is someone available to install promptly and manage early watering?
  4. Does the quote explain the actual work, timing and coverage?
